Beatitudes: 8 attitudes Jesus highlights to increase our experience of his blessing in our lives.

Key to happiness: 4 Hunger

‘Blessed are the ones who hunger and thirst for righteousness because they will be satisfied. ‘ Matthew 5:6

Hunger drives us to pursue something.  When we are hungry for food, we find ourselves in the kitchen looking for what there is to eat.  When we are hungry for righteousness, we pursue righteousness.  The word ‘hunger’ in this verse gives a sense of being famished or craving something.  In this world, people pursue happiness and instant gratification.  But the truly blessed person sets his or her desire towards the wholeness we experience as we learn to desire holiness.

Righteousness is the place in which we stand when we are in right standing with God. Righteousness is firstly a gift that God gives us. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).

The word justified is another way of saying ‘made righteous’. Continue reading Romans 3…vs 24 ‘being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus ‘.  The righteousness we receive as a gift from God and as an act of his grace towards us.

  1. When you think of the gift of God’s righteousness justifying you- making you righteous, how does that make you feel?
  2. What might the life of a person who is hungry and thirsty for righteousness look like?

Some people could slip into operating in a religious ‘spirit’/attitude, trying to obey rules to be righteous, rather than the desire to being to follow Jesus through his grace-filled enabling to live in the righteousness he gives us.

3. Can you identify where striving with ‘religious works’ has mimicked a hunger and thirst for righteousness? (an outward pressure to preform rather than an inward thirst to be more like Jesus)

4. How are we blessed if we hunger and thirst for righteousness?
